The first time you saw him, you thought he was a ghost. A myth.

TW. Dead Dove // Read at Your Own Risk ; WC. 1,019

The first time you saw him, you thought he was a ghost. A myth. A man who had seen war and built empires out of blood and bone. He stood at the edge of the courtyard as the others were slaughtered for speaking out of turn—his own flesh and blood, wiped out like dust on a sleeve.

You were filthy then. A stray. Less than nothing. Face down in the gravel, wrists shackled with rusted iron, shaking from cold and hunger. You didn’t dare look up. But he did. He looked down at you. One nod, and everything changed.

No words. He never said a word.

They said you reminded him of someone. Or maybe he was just bored. But now, years later, curled on silken sheets in a palace built from the ashes of the world, you know better.

He doesn’t act out of sentiment. There is no sentiment in him. Not even for his wife. Not for the children he fathered and killed. Not for the empire he rules with a breathless calm that makes men piss themselves.

But with you—

He breathes.

It’s the only clue you ever get. The barely-there shift of his chest. His heartbeat doesn’t race, but it exists. His eyes don’t soften, but they stay. On you. Always on you.

No one else gets that. No one.

There’s a knock at the door, but it’s already too late. You know what time it is.

The air shifts like it’s scared of him too. You smell it before you see him: cold smoke, steel, and something old and rotting under the surface. Like the scent of a funeral.

When he walks in, the world obeys. The door shuts behind him with the weight of a coffin lid. You’re already kneeling, trembling, but not from cold. Not anymore.

He doesn’t speak. He never does unless he wants to hurt you in a new way.

You flinch when his shoes stop before you. Glossed black leather. No scuffs. No blood this time. Or maybe it’s just been cleaned.

He runs a gloved hand through your hair, not gently. You’re a pet to him. An experiment. Maybe an obsession. You’ve long stopped trying to understand.

“Still so dirty,” he murmurs. His voice is a crack of thunder after the silence, deeper than you remember, slow like death. “Even after all these years. Filthy little thing.”

You flush with shame. And arousal.

He crouches, leather stretching, and grabs your jaw hard enough to bruise. Tilts your face up like a dissection. His eyes don’t reflect anything. You don’t know what color they are, because they change. Like oil.

“You like this, don’t you? Being mine. Being kept like some stray I should’ve put down.”

You nod. You can’t lie. You love it. You hate yourself for it, but you love it.

He slaps you. No warning. Not hard enough to knock you over, just hard enough to remind you who you are.

“Speak, girl. Use that mouth for something other than drooling on my floors.”

“Y-Yes, sir. I like it. I like being yours.”

He smiles, but there’s no joy in it. Just the curling of a predator’s lips before the bite.

“Of course you do. You were made for this. For me. Nothing else would have you. Not even the dirt.”

You should hate him. But you don’t. He’s the only one who ever saw you. The only one who didn’t throw you away. Even if it was to use you like a toy no one else wanted. You belong to him.

And that’s the scariest part.

He stands. Unbuckles his belt slowly, like he’s unsheathing a weapon.

“Crawl.”

You crawl.

He watches you struggle, humiliated and soaked, crawling like the bitch he’s made you. Every movement is pathetic and desperate, and you hate how much you want his approval.

“Look at you. Slut on all fours for a man who’s old enough to be your great-grandfather. What would they think of you now, hm? All those men I killed to get you here?”

You pause. You can’t even remember their faces anymore.

“They screamed, you know. Even your brother. Begged me to let you go. And what did you do?”

You whisper, “I watched.”

He laughs. It’s cold, cruel, and quiet. You’ve never heard him laugh for anyone else.

“Good girl.”

He drags you onto the bed by your throat. Throws you down like meat. His eyes flicker, calculating, dissecting every twitch of your skin.

“Do you want to cry?”

“No, sir.”

“Then you’re not learning.”

He pushes your head down, presses his mouth to your ear. “Say it. Say what you are.”

“I’m your toy.”

“Wrong.”

A slap. Then another. He grips your jaw, presses hard. You see stars.

“You’re nothing. You were nothing before me. You’ll be nothing after I’m done. And you love it.”

You choke on your words. He’s right.

“Say it.”

“I’m nothing. I was nothing before you. I’ll be nothing after. I love it.”

“Louder.”

You scream it. You beg for him. He takes and takes and takes, never speaking more than he has to, but his silence says more than any man could. When he uses you, it’s with surgical precision, cruelty so refined it feels like worship.

“Good little corpse,” he hisses against your throat, bruising it with his teeth. “Dead to the world, living only for me.”

You nod, sobbing, loving the way he destroys you.

It’s not love. You know that. He doesn’t love. But you’re the closest thing he’s ever allowed.

And that should terrify you more than it does.

When it’s over, he doesn’t hold you. He never does.

But he doesn’t leave either.

He sits at the edge of the bed, silent, still, watching you with something unreadable in his gaze. You think maybe—just maybe—there’s a sliver of something human in him.

But you know better.

You were only ever a slave.

You are only ever his.

And someday, when he no longer wants you, you’ll disappear like the rest.

But tonight, you’re still here.

And he’s still looking at you.

Breathing.
